A huge amount of laws are directed at making life outside the system a criminal offense.
Wanna live somewhere? Property laws. Pay for a piece of land? Tax laws. Just camp? Trespassing. Sleep on the street? Vagrancy and loitering. Not on the electrical grid? Have a composting toilet? Live in alternative structures? Zoning laws.
You got kids? They go to state-approved schools or learn state-approved curriculum or the CPS shows up and takes them.
This strikes hardest against indigenous people, but it keeps the rest of the society compliant with furthering the settler-colonial project. After all, there’s no other choice.
But why…? Why is there no other choice? Who did that?
